Koru room
The Koru Room at Kirwee Tree House is a calm, nurturing space dedicated to the unique needs of our youngest tamariki aged 0 to 2 years. Just as the unfurling koru symbolises new life, growth, and potential, our environment supports each infant and toddler to feel safe, loved, and empowered as they begin their early learning journey.
Our experienced kaiako (teachers) understand the importance of building strong, trusting relationships with both tamariki and their whānau. We prioritise respectful care moments, responsive routines, and plenty of one-on-one interactions that foster emotional security and well-being.
The Koru Room is purposefully designed to promote exploration at each child's own pace. With a focus on sensory play, open-ended resources, and natural materials, we encourage curiosity and learning through movement, play, and meaningful connection. Our kaiako closely observe each child's interests and developmental milestones, offering gentle guidance and opportunities to grow confidence and independence.
We work in close partnership with families, acknowledging you as your child’s first teacher. Communication, consistency, and care are at the heart of everything we do in the Koru Room.
2-3.5 years
Kowhai Room
The Kōwhai Room at Kirwee Tree House is a vibrant, engaging space designed for tamariki aged 2 to 3.5 years—a time filled with exploration, discovery, and growing independence.
In this stage of development, children are naturally curious and eager to make sense of the world around them. Our passionate kaiako (teachers) support this journey by creating a rich learning environment that encourages active exploration, social interaction, and imaginative play.
The Kōwhai Room fosters a sense of belonging and security while nurturing developing self-help skills, emotional confidence, and growing autonomy. Tamariki are encouraged to make choices, try new things, and express themselves in ways that build resilience and a positive sense of self.
Learning experiences are thoughtfully planned around tamariki interests and developmental stages, incorporating music, art, movement, storytelling, nature play, and early literacy and numeracy concepts. Social development is a key focus, with an emphasis on cooperation, communication, and respectful relationships.
We maintain strong, open partnerships with whānau, valuing your insights and working together to support each child's learning journey. In the Kōwhai Room, tamariki are celebrated as capable, curious learners who are empowered to grow at their own pace.
3.5-6
Totara
The Tōtara Room at Kirwee Tree House supports tamariki aged 3.5 years until they begin school. This is a time of exciting growth—socially, emotionally, and cognitively—as children begin to develop the foundational skills they’ll take with them into the next stage of their learning journey.
In the Tōtara Room, we embrace a learning through play approach, recognising that play is the most powerful way for young children to explore, understand, and engage with the world around them. Our rich learning environment fosters creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and independence, with tamariki supported to pursue their interests and build on their strengths.
We intentionally weave early literacy, numeracy, self-regulation, and social competencies into daily experiences, ensuring that children develop strong foundation skills for school in a meaningful, age-appropriate way. Kaiako observe and respond to each child’s development, tailoring support to ensure they feel confident and capable.
For our oldest tamariki, we offer a dedicated transition-to-school programme, designed to build confidence and familiarity with the school environment. A key part of this programme includes weekly visits to Kirwee Model School, where children participate in classroom experiences, explore the school setting, and build relationships with teachers and peers. These visits are open to all of our tamariki, regardless of which school they will eventually attend.
The Tōtara Room empowers children to take pride in their learning, embrace challenges, and leave Tree House with a strong sense of identity, capability, and belonging.
Come and see how we prepare our learners not just for school—but for life.
